Backlinking for SEO

Who has done backlinks for ecommerce sites, how have they done it and did it work?

    I tried it, but it didn't really work, couldn't get prominent links back to the site and failed to grab PR and traffic. Went for niche in ecommerce and really stomped a specific product area. Now I start to have people linking to me independently, no fuzz with backlinks, trackbacks or linkswaps. Works for me, but have no idea how to do it with bigger site (well, produce masses of concurrent content).
