Another advertising tribe that I'm a member of had an introduction thread - so I thought I'd start one here.
Hi all,
I've been doing search engine based marketing for four years now - first as a Search Engine Optimization Specialist with USWeb/CKS and now as the head of a small search engine marketing agency (www.firstranked.com). I've worked with some good companies over the years and now I'm interested in building up my agency by forming service partnerships with some local interactive agencies.
If you guys have any questions on search engine optimization, pay-per-click campaign management, or anything else related to search engines just drop me a message.
Take Care,
Marshall

Re: Introduce Yourself
Fri, January 9, 2004 - 12:53 PMHi Christoper,
Excuse my long rant - I've been thinking about the "Florida" update a lot lately.
I think Google is continually trying to limit the intentional manipulation of their index and they've been very successful at doing this. Every once in a while though they put out a filter that goes a little too far and ends up penalizing sites that may have unknowingly used techniques that Google views as manipulative. I think Florida was another example of this and Google is now trying to amend the situation while at the same time avoiding publicly admitting that there was a problem with the algorithm in the first place.
For about a year now I've expected Google to build some type of correlational spam filter, something that would compare the content of a web site against a long list of suspect optimization techniques and only penalize the page if it contained a total number of these techniques that was above a predetermined threshold. Sort of a bell curve for spam. Given the wide range of suspect causes for the recent penalizations I'm wondering if they may now be using a filter like this.
In response to my suspicions I've actually taken to deoptimizing some of my client's sites somewhat (removing alt tag keywords, minimizing identical inbound link text, etc). My clients tended to do very well with the Florida update so I'm thinking I may be on the right track with this strategy. It’s pretty ironic though - ranking better by optimizing less.

Re: Introduce Yourself
Sun, January 11, 2004 - 5:21 PMAgreed - we reoptimized a couple of sites by focusing on batches of related keyphrases instead of trying to hammer down one keyphrase over and over again, and we're slowly working our way back up...

Thu, February 19, 2004 - 12:28 PMHello Marshall,
Have you ever come across a 'master list' (approximate, of course) of what Google determines as 'good and bad?'
Thanks,

Fri, March 19, 2004 - 3:44 PMHi, I'm Lauren.
Right now I work for a directory advertising agency as an Account Planner, but I'm trying to break into Interactive Advertsing (Account Management or Analyst).
I've been in talks with Digitas in NYC and 10th Degree in Irvine, CA. No offers yet, but I'm working on it.
Coincidentaly, our agency also has an interactive division (www.wahlstrom-i.com) which specializes in Search Marketing services for local and national clients.

Re: Introduce Yourself
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 6:46 PMHi all,
I have studied marketing off and on because I know it is the work horse that brings sales, thus eventually profits, hopefully, in the door.
I work for a marketing company that is working to build the largest database of customers in the world. We have active customers who report to us daily. We expect to be at 2-3 million by the end of this year. The database is constantly updated since our customers answer questions everyday. Their buying habits are watched everyday. The great thing about it is that it is all voluntary. There is no spam involved. The advertisements and questions are passive.
This is such a great program that the company I develop web pages for has changed their whole marketing program to partner with the advertising company I work for.
We still need search engine marketing for some of our other partners though, so I am glad to know about Marshall. -

Re: Introduce Yourself
Thu, August 5, 2004 - 12:07 PMHi there,
I'm Darian, the director of marketing for Tribe.net.
Looking for good ways to increase our visibility across major metropolitan cities. Obviously we'll be doing keyword buys and optimizing. However, if you have other options please let me know.
And, as it seems many people are confused about our service (which is a product problem that we're now trying to solve against) we want to become a premiere listings service where you find out what to do and where to go from people in the know. Ultimately we see ourselves a better version of Craig's List where you interact/transact with people who you can trust based on their true identities, who they know, and what how they've transacted in the past (none of which you can do today on Craig's List).
So, anyone want to help us get to the next level?
Cheers,
-Darian

Re: Introduce Yourself
Wed, August 18, 2004 - 1:10 PMHi,
My name is Chris - I've been working in various marketing positions for the past ten years - freelance and corporate (MBA Marketing, BS Computer Science). Very familiar with all forms of marketing - online and offline.
I've been on the Tribe network for a few years. It has been very interesting seeing how it is being used to network among people (which is what originally attracted me to the tribe) and also used to market products and services.
I think for it to "compete" with craigslist, it needs to be organized more locally, or give people instructions/ideas on how to find items locally.
The ability to find certain tribes could also be improved. For example, when searching tribes, include the ability to list by number of members.
Something to consider - is it just craigslist that you are looking at, or other network portals such as LinkedIn?

Sat, January 22, 2005 - 9:19 PMMy name is Captain Sweep. I'm a pi-rate. I'm not quite your ordinary pirate.
I've been developing a multi-dimensional thinking system called the Inflow Matrix for the past 10 years. The original intention was to create thinking system first, without the limitations of the technology. Then build a software system that could run any organization with the technology that was available.
I am currently experimenting with using tribe.net as the place to build the worlds first Shared Knowledge Community that uses the inflow matrix as the operating system.
This community is going to be the design team for The Utopian Game,eh? a global game to promote the creation of a sustainable economic system.
I see this as one piece of a much larger operating system. Its a lovely tool and you have done a great job.
I'm a systems designer and I find most of the time no one has any idea what I'm talking about.
Why am I a pirate? Because the governments are corrupt and verging on insanity.
The way to shift from authority to autonomy is to have a holistic information system. Makes sense to have it match how your mind processes information.
I'm very interested in internet marketing. I developed a marketing brainstorming tool that integrates into the Inflow Matrix so I have quite a knack for creative brainstorming.
I just joined this tribe...I'll be of service if I can to those that request and I'm looking for allies for me very secret plan.
