You must have all seen the Ad Age article about Tribe.net and how Newspaper companies like Knight Ridder and Washington Post are taking a closer look at these types of online communities and how they fit in with their online newspaper sites and classifieds... I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are regarding newspaper web sites as an online advertising medium?
I know for a fact they get a ton of traffic when it comes to local news and sports and the readers are loyal but are they condusive to marketing? What about classifieds? Have they missed the boat when it comes to online classifieds? Has e-bay, yahoo and sites like tribe.net beat them to the punch?

As always I guess it will come down to who has the best business model. Tribe closed a $3 Million investment round recently, didn't they? -

Re: Ad Age Article - Newspaper Web Sites
Wed, December 17, 2003 - 10:42 AMYes, the business model is key to their success, but there's also the question of site design and info access. Here in New Orleans, the major (and only) daily as well as the network affiliate TV stations are each vying for local readership, but none has a well-designed, intuitive website. At least once a week, I try to get local news or access local classifieds on these sites, and 9 times out of 10, I throw up my hands in disgust because I can't find what I need.
It seems the problem--especially for newspapers--is resisting the temptation to post every column inch of info on their website. Rabid internet junkies might be inclined to sift through it all, but me, I can't even look at Craig's List, much less the Times-Picayune site. At the very least, they should consider a system of secondary or subdomains to make visitors feel more at ease.
If they get on the ball now, they might be able to save their classified sections before too many more folks clue in to the fact that you can do geographic searches on eBay.... -

Thu, December 18, 2003 - 9:21 AMProbably the next wave of killer apps for the Internet is going to be hyper-personalization. It has to be, simply because there's too damn much information out there as it is. Type in a common term into Google and two million results show up. The tool that will be on everyone's PC will be the one that answers the question, "Computer, can you help me find what I'm looking for quickly and precisely?"
