So what is the concensus here about using Tribe to further awareness of your company/venture? It would seem like a great place to do so, but no body wants this place to be spam city.
Are passive name drops the way to go? Discussing your company/venture only when relevant to a post or question? Are listings cool or not cool?
I suppose it comes down to the basics of risk versus reward, but I thought I'd see what those in this tribe thought in particular.

Re: Tribe IM Ethics
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 9:18 PMManners never goes out of style.
Follow your gut, use tact is my say. A good Blog by Seth Godin speaks of how people who are 2-3 handshakes away are becoming more and more brash and rude and demanding. While I am new here, I feel nervouse too about asking for help or advice. -

Advice is one thing it's another if you're pointing them to...
Mon, April 19, 2004 - 7:01 PMsomething you have direct investment in (i.e. a business or service).
It's a fine line to walk.
I do think that asking advice is completely welcomed here. I see it all the time in various tribes and everyone here is more than willing to share knowledge and information. That's what makes this place so great. I've yet to get a rude response to a request for advice or help.... well aside from trolls and the random obnoxious devils advocate.

Re: Tribe IM Ethics
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 10:46 PMwell, are we really your target audience? having answered that, then you could weigh the value of "further[ing] awareness of your company/venture" vs. offending people.
it seems to me if you are itching to tell about yourself, you could start a new post, and people will either respond or not. if it is out of line for the tribe, the moderator can delete it and/or let you know off-post.
various methods have been tried here, on tribe, and in the biz dev tribes, most of them have seemed intrusive, but some haven't and one guy recently got blasted. i can't imagine, from what i have seen, that any of them have resulted in increased business for the poster. -

This is along the lines of what I've been doing...
Mon, April 19, 2004 - 6:59 PMThe last thing I want to do is spam people, but if others mention something in the area my company and services can help with then I mention it.
I would like to test the waters with a more direct approach, but I don't want to be cast out of the tribe (so to speak).

Re: Tribe IM Ethics
Sun, April 18, 2004 - 11:05 PMGreat questions.
My approach is to advertise through my interests. My personal web page has some advertising. If people want to know more about me, they will ask. I feel it is just as lobocita says, brash advertising only drives people away.
