I’m working on a project where the owner of a business / organization has over 1000 emails. In the past he sent emails by manually inserting the emails 30 at a time. I need to enter these into a database or something and find a program where I can send one email out to 1000 or more email addresses….one that has a opt out for those who may no longer want the emails. I’m new to email marketing and need this asap – YIKES. Also… the owner is on a very tight budget – I’m working in exchange for experience and a reference so nothing expensive.

Should my blog have a different domain name from the product websites or should I choose to post the blog on the same one?

I thought that if I use a different name it will throw people off and be even more objective, even though a blog is probably mostly subjective!!

LOWERING a search result in Google - possible?

Hi all,

I have a friend whose name is distinctive enough that all the top hits on a Google search for it are indeed about her. Recently, a page went up with some embarrasing info about her, and it's one of the top hits now. Since she can't affect the page which posted the info, I assume that the only way to lower its prominence in the search is to create more links to other pages which mention her, so as to supercede the bad result with these.

Is there is a ready way to do this? I have seen tribe.net threads as hits on Google in the past, for example. Does this mean that if she joins up and posts to very active threads, signing her full name, these threads will eventually overrun the result she wishes to suppress? Are there other ways to generate "noise" to dampen the impact of the bad "signal"?

So, I will be selling my first self-help DVD and I've been talking with friends about the best type of website lay out to use.

Is it best to use the single long page type where they are forced to run through the whole thing, and then make their purchase near the end of the pitch?

Or is it best to use multiple pages broken down into "subjects" so peoplee have the freedom to click around at their will?

I've seen one marketing company saying "simple is best".

Any opinions out there?

I'd really appreciate it!

Also, if anyone like any particular website making software, I'd be curious to what it is!!

I purchased GoDaddy cart to integrate with QB merchant account, but their cart is more of a storefront and does not integrate with my exsting website well.

Can anyone recommend a simple shopping cart I can integrate? Probably server based. I have about a dozen services i sell that need customization. An autoresponder to the buyer would be ideal. (is that a given?)

I wonder why this tribe is so dead.... 300 people. And the topic is so important, especially within this communication medium which is at the essence of what internet marketing is...word of mouth through networks....

I'd like to stimulate some discussion and will need 50 people from here to participate. Is anyone game?

Here is the bait...Everyone has some little trick in internet marketing that works really well. Something you might not have told many people but you know its good. If we all put 1 tip down, we all get 50 new tips. Are you willing to forgoe your secret to gain 49 others?

I doubt anyone here even tracks this tribe. I'm going to start this by adding an idea that just came to mind to get some traffic here. I haven't done it before so I don't know if it will work. I'm going to make another thread. Bump up the posts and see if an extraordinary jump in tribe posts for this tribe oaccurs, will the members look and then participate in this experiement to generate some great internet marketing tips for all of us.

It was soliciting an online poker site. This was the first unsolicited e-mail sales pitch I'd received inside any kind of social software and feels like some kind of spam-free grace period just expired.

Is nothing sacred online? Seems like a silly question to ask about such an unregulated, guerilla-dominated medium, but lately I've been becoming interested in "ethical internet marketing" as more than an oxymoron.

Does anyone here profess to practice internet marketing ethically? What do you use as guidelines? Are there spaces that you consider to be off-limits or practices that you refrain from online? Why? What are the benefits and the drawbacks of working under an "ethical" model?

Generating Site Traffic

What I would like to know is how generate greater site traffic without pimping my site or spending money? I want to engage the internet free energy machine . . .

Site is not mainstream in subject matter and is mostly an educational resource, however also I advertise my profession and sell some artwork through café press.

Site ave stats: 50 unique visitors a day and 300 hits (6 weeks worth of stats as my stat meter is only 6 weeks old).

How to get started?

I recently came across a site I found intriguing that a casual friend put together: http://www.knick-knacks4u.com/. Apparently this is a packaged deal kind of website where whoever is behind it handles all the merchandise, and who knows what else. I really don't know how my friend fits into the picture. I do know that he's got the ability to add other products as he pleases, at least to some extent.

I'd be interested in doing something along these lines to supplement my interior design practice, but with a more sophisticated, higher end product line. How would I go about finding a setup of this nature and getting started? And getting the site advertised and listed in the search engines high enough to make it findable and distinguishable from anyone else's version of the same stuff?

My friend wasn't very helpful at all in pointing me in the right direction, I'm afraid, and I haven't been able to figure out what exactly to search for and have come up completely empty handed.

I’m very interested in the results you have with online advertising. A lot of campaigns I do have a result around 0.3 CTR and believe me that’s a good campaign:) In this case I’m talking about rich media banners by the way.
The Ad words campaign from Google has a better result. After a year I have an average of 2.4 CTR.

Why are keep on trying it with banners. Is it good for branding, because for direct sales it seems to s*ck. Or maybe the European market (Dutch market) is so difference compare to the US?

You know, it's one thing to talk about, study, and "do" internet marketing; it's another to sell it. How do you sell it? I mean, you call a business and start the process. What's next? I've talked to a couple of people and have heard some good ideas. One, for instance, is actually doing a little research up front, say by doing a little web analysis on their site, and then approaching them with it. But the trick is taking it to that next level -- understanding a client's needs and presenting them with a value proposition. I'm personally interested in helping people understand and practice good internet marketing, so how do you approach a business and sell an internet marketing service?

I think that this question differs from some of the literature out there -- there are some really good marketing and copywriting gurus out there, some of whom may be on this tribe -- but it would be interesting to hear from people as they approach people with the idea of internet marketing, then start the journey with them.

Is this an appropriate question for this tribe? What do ya'll think about it?

Free Classifieds business model

We run free classifieds at www.theBubbler.com - a family-friendly, general-interest Wisconsin portal.

The free classifieds are the primary draw that gains about 6 new Members/day (now at 2,700+) and allows us to sell about $6k / month of banners (no pop-ups, no nag screens).

We've rounded out offerings with some social networking aspects (a la tribe) and have a list of 100 more features to implement...but classifieds are/were the key.

Learned this in the print world; one of the premier alternative newsweeklies, the Chicago Reader, uses the same business model. Free classifieds create free content and attract viewers. Advertisers want to be where the veiwers are.

A tremendous amount of effort is required to get 'critical mass' in traffic, especially without a lot of $$$ for online and offline marketing, but we've done it (gotten to critical mass, that is).

Another variant of the free classifieds model is for a site that sells widgets to offer their veiwers the opportunity to unload their used widgets via that site. For example, a boat dealer can list (on consignment or without fee) the used boats of individuals to help those people afford the new watercraft.

We're interested in using our expertise on behalf of others who would like to develop a geo-centric, lifestyle-centric or other portal...or we'd like to get ideas of what works and what doesn't for you, or to comment on your suggestions and questions.

Hey some advice on media kits?

We are in the process of developing a quick and effective media kit for our web site launch. We will have content and advice for a lot of life stuff, with an employment spin. I've downloaded CNet's media kit to get an idea, but wow a lot of information. Does anyone have tips on what is most important-to focus on, and what the costs should be when your traffic isn't that strong yet?

Tribe IM Ethics

So what is the concensus here about using Tribe to further awareness of your company/venture? It would seem like a great place to do so, but no body wants this place to be spam city.

Are passive name drops the way to go? Discussing your company/venture only when relevant to a post or question? Are listings cool or not cool?

I suppose it comes down to the basics of risk versus reward, but I thought I'd see what those in this tribe thought in particular.

Google Adwords?

I've used them for a while with mixed results. My only real success was with advertising a t-shirt site I threw up on a whim, http://www.flyntforgovernor.org/ (now down) during the californian gubernatorial race.. It got me about 20,000 extra hits generating about $10k in sales (of which I saw about $2k after advertising costs).. so I was happy..

What do others thing about it?

Ad Age Article - Newspaper Web Sites

You must have all seen the Ad Age article about Tribe.net and how Newspaper companies like Knight Ridder and Washington Post are taking a closer look at these types of online communities and how they fit in with their online newspaper sites and classifieds... I'm curious as to what everyone's thoughts are regarding newspaper web sites as an online advertising medium?
I know for a fact they get a ton of traffic when it comes to local news and sports and the readers are loyal but are they condusive to marketing? What about classifieds? Have they missed the boat when it comes to online classifieds? Has e-bay, yahoo and sites like tribe.net beat them to the punch?
